Benefits of Chiropractic on Athletic Performance

As an athlete, maintaining optimal physical performance is crucial for success within our chosen sport or activity. Chiropractic care can be a valuable tool in supporting and enhancing our athletic performance.

One of the main benefits of chiropractic care for athletes is improved joint function. When a joint is misaligned or subluxated,* that misalignment can lead to dysfunction in our movement patterns. These dysfunctional movement patterns can create unwanted stress and pressure on the joints and its structures. When the joints of the body are mobile and free of misalignments or subluxations, we notice an improvement in our range of motion and movement patterns, a reduction in nociception*, and an increase in proprioceptive* feedback to the brain.

Chiropractic care can also improve muscle function and coordination. By adjusting the spine and other extremity joints, chiropractic care can improve nervous system communication between the brain and the rest of the body. This improved communication can enhance proprioceptive feedback that leads to better muscle function and coordination, which can be beneficial for athletes who rely on precise movements and quick reflexes.

In addition to the physical benefits, chiropractic care can also help to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. The combined influence of increased nociception and decreased proprioception raises our stress response (fight/flight response). While our stress response is important in small doses, the activation of this stress response on an ongoing basis impacts everything from blood pressure to sleep, body composition, healing, and a host of other factors. This can be especially important for athletes who may experience high levels of stress and pressure to perform at their best. By addressing these issues, chiropractic care can help athletes feel more balanced and focused, which can translate to improved athletic performance.

In summary, chiropractic care can offer a range of benefits for athletes looking to improve their performance. From improved joint function and muscle coordination to stress reduction and overall well-being, chiropractic care can be a valuable addition to any athlete’s training regimen.

*subluxated - a dynamic lesion within joints that cause dysfunctional movement patterns throughout joint ranges of motion.

*nociception - negative messaging sent from peripheral sensory receptors to the brain. It is important in engaging the “fight/flight response” that protects us from danger in our surrounding environment.

*proprioception - positive messaging sent from peripheral sensory receptors to the brain. Important in our perception and awareness of body positioning and movements.
